So distant from the Sun that temperatures plunge to extraordinary extremes, Neptune is a planet of darkness, ice and violent storms. This atmospheric piece uses the whole-tone scale, constantly shifting by semitone, to create an unsettled and unpredictable sound world. Although the notation appears complex, the repeating patterns require surprisingly little reading, making the piece accessible to younger players. Written in free time, each performer is encouraged to shape the music with imagination and freedom. Written for Dhyana, who especially enjoyed its drama. Approximate level: Grade 1–2.
