Once considered the ninth planet of our solar system, Pluto was reclassified as a dwarf planet in 2006. Despite its “downgrade”, it still felt impossible to leave it out of the collection — Pluto was a planet throughout my own childhood! This was the first piece to be written for Orbit, built around repeating minor chord patterns and rich pedal sonorities. The sustain pedal can remain down through much of the piece, creating a full and atmospheric sound without complicated pedal changes. Written for Leo, who performed it first at just 8 years old. Approximate level: Grade 1–2.
